Coloring is not just for kids!
While there is no research to support coloring as a form of relaxation, art therapy has been used as a relaxation technique for quite some time. Clinical psychologist, Dr. Scott Bea, Psy.D., has said –
While adult coloring may differ slightly from this mindfulness art therapy, I suspect the adult coloring would yield similar results. It is likely that its therapeutic benefits would be similar to listening to a person’s favorite music…Adult coloring requires modest attention focused outside of self-awareness. - It relaxes the brain.
- Low stakes make it pleasurable.
It’s important to reduce stress and find ways to relax. This is especially important for those with a chronic illness. Stress can trigger a flare in symptoms and cause more pain.
