This review is The Dark Lake by Sarah Bailey. One of my favorite ways to rest is by curling up with a good book. Like movies and music, all genres appeal to me, and I give all books a chance to be ‘heard’!

The Dark Lake is Sarah Bailey’s first novel and what a great first novel it is.

In the small town of Smithson, the body of Rosalind Ryan has been discovered in the lake. Detective Gemma Woodstock leads the investigation of her former classmate and is determined to find who is responsible for Rosalind’s death. More importantly, why did they want to kill her? She was loved by all and was a beloved teacher popular with students and facility staff alike.

Sarah Bailey's The Dark Lake is an impressive mystery with dark secrets at every turn. #thedarklake #sarahbailey #thriller #fiction #bookreviews #brandisbookcorner Click To Tweet

This book is also available with Kindle Unlimited Membership Plans.

As the mystery of Rose’s death is unraveled, Gemma finds buried secrets surrounding the beautiful teacher. However, the secrets make it harder for the detective to find out who really killed her. Even Gemma has her own secrets that prevent Rose’s death from being solved. Gemma must confess her own wrongdoings in order to find the truth she seeks but she isn’t sure she’s ready to do that.

The story is a little longer than it needed to be, however, it’s enjoyable from beginning to end. The chapters are relatively short and told from two points in time – when Gemma was younger and the present. I give it four out of five stars.

Book of the Month Club

I enjoyed books so much that I joined the Book of the Month Club to continue receiving the latest and greatest books via mail. Some of the books are exclusive to BOTM club members a month prior to their official publishing date! Each month I’m excited about the monthly selections, and it’s tough to select just one. (And when I can’t decide on one, I can add additional books for a small add-on charge, and – as always – shipping is included in the monthly membership fee.) Can’t find one you want? That’s okay, too! Skip a month, pocket the credit to spend next month, and you won’t be charged for that current month.

Book Ratings and Reviews

Each book I review is based on my opinion. This does not mean you will agree with the review or love/like/dislike the book, too. There’s a quote that says, “No two persons ever read the same book” by Edmund Wilson, and it’s quite true!
